Remember the Tamil Nadu woman who won the social media for selling homemade idlis for Rs 1? Nearly two years after this incident, business tycoon Anand Mahindra has finally fulfilled his promise to “invest” in her venture.
Investing in the venture
For 3 decades, Kamalathal from Coimbatore had been managing her business from a small shop. Since the beginning, she was never bothered about earning profits and that’s the reason she sells idli for Re 1 till this day.
Her kind gesture had impressed the Chairman of Mahindra Group at the time, and he also shared her video to help her in any way possible for her great offering to society. He then stepped forward to arrange an LPG connection for her to run her idli shop. She had been using a wood-burning stove.
Later, he came to know that the old lady’s priority was a new home cum workspace, Mahindra’s troops charged their teams by helping register land in her name.
A new home cum workspace
Taking to the internet, Anand Mahindra announced that the over 80-year-old woman would soon have a house of her own, which would also run as her new food joint.
“Only rarely does one get to play a small part in someone’s inspiring story, and I would like to thank Kamalathal, better known as Idli Amma, for letting us play a small part in hers,” Mahindra wrote online while making the announcement.

He also informed that the company’s real estate and infrastructure wing would build the customised home-cum-shop “as per Kamalathal’s requirement”. He thanked the local LPG provider for their constant supply of gas to the woman to run her business.
